Comparison of the Role of Women

In this blog, i will be comparing how women are viewed in the Bible versus how they are viewed in the Qur'an. There are many similarities and many differences in the way both of the religious books view women. I would say that there is probably more similarities than there are differences. I do not agree with how women are viewed in either of the books, I believe that there should be no gender roles and that women should be viewed as equal to men.

My first primary source was the bible. Women were viewed very differently than men were. Women were not suppose to speak in the church, preach, teach bible lessons, or speak in front of the congregation. If they wanted to learn about God they had to ask their husbands because it is not viewed as being correct for them to speak out in the church or in front of the church (1 cor. 14:33b-35.)
Within the marriage of a man and woman God has assigned the role of sharing the gospel with his family to the man. The women were not suppose to lead their own teachings but to help the man lead his preaching. Women are suppose to fulfill their ministries through what God has set out for them, running the home. Also the bible states that the man is the head of the wife similar to how God is the head of the church.

My second primary source is the Qur'an. The Qur'an has some similar views, but some different. In the Qur'an it is very clearly stated that women should dress modestly and not flaunt their bodies. Women are not suppose to show anybody their naked bodies except to their husband, and to show no sexual desires (Sura 24:30-31.) In the Qur'an it states that women are respected and have education but that men are higher educated and ranked above them (Sura 2:228.) In the Sura, it specifically states to fear God and to show respect to women. Also it states that women have the same rights as their husbands.

Outline:
  • The Bible and the Qur'an both state that women should dress modestly and not to flaunt their bodies.
  • In both religious books women are viewed lower than men.
  • In the bible God says women were created to help the men in whatever they are involved in
  • The Bible says for the wives to obey their husbands
  • The Qur'an says for the women to show no sexual desire

Conclusion:

The Bible and the Qur'an are pretty similar on their views on women. They both view women as a "degree" lower than men. They also both view women as needing to obey and submit to their husbands. Both of the books say that women should be well respected. Also they both state that women should dress modestly, and not to flaunt their bodies.
